Problems with vision are a common complaint following a Whiplash injury post motor vehicle accident. Studies have shown that blurred vision was the most common complaint. Damage or injury to nerves in the cervical spine, specifically the cervical sympathetic chain, can occur with whiplash injuries and is usually a result of severe hyperextension injuries as one might see in a high impact rear end collision type of auto accident. If Mild Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion has occurred studies show an increase in visual disturbances. Most of the eye symptoms heal without invasive therapy but can take time. One study indicates that 70% of patients with visual symptoms were still suffering problems eight weeks post trauma and 20% had problems 12 months post auto injury. Muscle tension of the head and neck can also affect the eyes and surrounding musculature. Releasing this tension especially the suboccipital musculature through massage and chiropractic care can be highly effective in relieving ocular symptoms. If one is suffering eye symptoms that are severe and are not recovering they should be referred to an ophthalmologist.
