Whiplash is fairly simple. It is basically a neck sprain/strain that occurs when the head and torso are thrust in opposite directions in a very quick manner. The neck is the focal part of the injury in Whiplash because it is between the torso and the head. If one were to push you from behind fairly hard without you being aware of it, the first motion your torso goes through is forward and your head goes backward. When you are hit from behind in your car your torso and head go through that same exact motion and can cause mild to severe injury to the neck: Whiplash.
